Resource Smoothing

What is Resource Smoothing?

Resource smoothing is a project management technique used to optimize how resources are allocated without changing the overall project deadline. Unlike resource leveling, which may delay tasks or extend the project timeline, resource smoothing works within the existing schedule and critical path. The focus is on distributing workloads more evenly so that no resource is overwhelmed, but the project still finishes on time.

For example, if a designer has a heavy workload in one week and a lighter one the next, resource smoothing would adjust non-critical tasks to shift some of the work forward or backward. This helps balance the effort without delaying the project’s end date. The key constraint is that smoothing can only happen where there is “float” or flexibility in the schedule, meaning adjustments are made on tasks that won’t affect the overall delivery.

This technique is particularly valuable when maintaining strict deadlines is a priority, such as in client-facing projects or contractual work where extensions are not an option. It minimizes spikes in workload, reduces the risk of burnout, and makes resource allocation more predictable. However, its application is limited by how much slack time exists in the plan, so it’s not always possible to smooth everything.

In short, resource smoothing is about making better use of the time you already have, ensuring steady progress without pushing out delivery dates.
