Premortem Analysis

What is Premortem Analysis?

A premortem is a project planning technique where teams imagine the project has failed and then work backwards to figure out why. By flipping the perspective like this, potential risks and weaknesses surface earlier than they would in regular planning and the team can address them before execution starts.

The exercise is usually led by the project manager who asks team members to think of different scenarios that could completely kill the project. Common examples are unrealistic deadlines, resource shortages, miscommunication or shifting priorities. Once those are identified the team can take preventive measures like refining timelines, clarifying responsibilities or adjusting scope.

Unlike a postmortem which looks back after a project is complete, a premortem happens at the very start. Its not about focusing on failure but building resilience into the project plan. By creating space for open and honest discussion it also reduces groupthink and makes sure everyone’s concerns are heard.

Premortem is valuable in any environment where uncertainty is high. It gives teams and stakeholders more awareness, proactive decision making and ultimately more project success.
