Planning Poker

What is Planning Poker?

Planning poker (in project management), also known as Scrum poker, is a collaborative estimation technique used by Agile teams to assess the complexity and effort required for tasks or user stories. Developed by James Grenning in 2002 and later popularized by Mike Cohn, the method introduces a gamified element into task estimation by using a deck of cards with values (often based on the Fibonacci sequence).

In practice, team members discuss a task, then simultaneously reveal their chosen card representing their estimate. Differences in estimates spark constructive discussions, ensuring every team member has input and that hidden assumptions or misunderstandings are uncovered. This process reduces bias, builds consensus, and results in more accurate workload planning.

Beyond estimation, planning poker strengthens team communication, transparency, and shared responsibility. It transforms a potentially dry task into an engaging and structured process that helps teams better understand their capacity before finalizing project scope.
