Requirements Traceability Matrix

What is Requirements Traceability Matrix?

A Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) is a document used in project management to track and confirm every client or stakeholder requirement is met throughout the project lifecycle. It links each requirement to the work products or test cases that prove it. By doing so the RTM ensures nothing is missed from the initial specification to delivery.

Typically the matrix is a table where each requirement is listed alongside related items such as design components, development tasks, test cases and test results. This allows project managers, QA teams and stakeholders to see at a glance if all requirements are accounted for and tested. If a requirement changes the RTM shows what needs to be updated, so the team can manage dependencies and reduce risk.

The RTM is also proof of compliance in regulated industries where showing all requirements were met is critical. Beyond compliance it helps communication between teams and stakeholders by providing transparency and accountability. It shows not only what’s been done but also what’s still to be done.

In reality the RTM is a simple but powerful tool that keeps projects aligned to client expectations, improves quality assurance and increases confidence in the deliverables.
